ABI Launches Intro to Machine Learning Course for Bioinformatics Students

The Armenian Bioinformatics Institute (ABI) is starting a new course this May titled Intro to Machine Learning, aimed at equipping bioinformatics students with essential machine learning (ML) skills for research in the life sciences.

The course will be taught by Simon Steshin and will run from May 7 to July 2, with weekly sessions every Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at ABI. Over the span of eight sessions, students will be introduced to a broad range of ML methods, including classification, regression, decision trees, clustering, dimensionality reduction, and neural networks.

Although structured around core ML engineering principles, the course places a strong emphasis on biological applications, such as cancer classification, computer vision for microscopy images, and the analysis of high-dimensional omics data.

The course is designed for students who already have a working knowledge of Python. Experience with data science libraries such as pandas, numpy, or matplotlib is recommended but not required.
