The Introduction to Machine Learning course is designed to weaponize bioinformatics students with the latest ML tools, turning them into academic berserks. Starting with the basics, you will explore the core techniques used in modern bioinformatics research - from training models for cancer classification and tackling computer vision tasks on microscopic images to analyzing high-dimensional data and fitting neural networks. While the curriculum follows the structure of standard ML engineering courses, it places a strong emphasis on biotech applications and the quirks of bioinformatics research.
Simon Steshin studied computational mathematics at Moscow State University and worked on self-driving cars at Yandex before switching to biotech and starting a master’s program in molecular biology and bioinformatics at Skoltech University. He conducted research on computational aging at Gero, co-authored a textbook and a course at Skoltech, and co-created the largest community of computational aging researchers -- computage.org. He conducted AI drug discovery research, contributed to the open-source ecosystem of drug discovery tools, and led successful drug discovery programs at Bioptic Inc. In Yerevan, Simon organized a machine learning competition on AI drug discovery.

To apply for this course, applicants are expected to have:
- Basic proficiency in Python programming.
- (Ideally) Experience with data science libraries, including: Pandas, Numpy, Matplotlib.
- (Ideally) Basics of linear algebra: vectors, norms, matrix multiplications.
- Working knowledge of English, as the course will be conducted in English.
